In a group, money paid upfront always ends up causing awkwardness. Not because people act in bad faith, but because nobody keeps track in their head. A shared split sorts it out without anyone having to bring it up.
A weekend for 6 in a holiday cottage. One person pays the rental, another does the food shop, a third covers petrol and tolls. Everyone logs what they paid as the weekend goes on, and nobody keeps receipts in their pocket hoping to remember them on Sunday night.
In a flatshare, the same question comes up every month: who paid for what. The split stays open all the time. Whenever you like, you can see what you’ve paid, what you owe and what you’re owed, without getting the calculator out.
Monday comes and it’s time to settle up. Instead of 6 criss-crossing bank transfers, Melimelo suggests the shortest list of transfers so everyone has paid the same share. 2 or 3 transfers, and everyone’s square.

Open beyond the household
That’s what sets Split apart from the rest of Melimelo. Participants don’t need to be in your household: your friends, flatmates and in-laws join with a code, from their own account. Your household members can see the split, but only participants count in the breakdown.
One expense, one payer
Each expense is logged with its amount and the person who paid. Nothing else to fill in. The breakdown updates with every entry.
Everyone’s balance
For each participant: what they’ve paid, and their balance. Money to receive on one side, money to pay on the other. The share per person is shown at the top, based on the total.
Settling up
The Breakdown view doesn’t just show balances: it lists the transfers needed so everyone has paid the same amount, with as few payments as possible.
Breakdown chart
A chart shows at a glance who covered what share of the spending, next to the total spent on the split.
Invite with a code
A share code is generated when the split is created, with Copy and Share right there. It has an expiry date, and you can renew it or stop sharing whenever you like.
Admin or member
Every participant has a role. The admin approves or declines access requests and can remove someone. To leave a split you’re the admin of, you hand over the role first.
Always up to date
When someone joins or leaves the split, they’re added to or removed from the breakdown automatically. Nobody has to redo the sums by hand when the group changes.
Connected to the rest
Alongside everything else in the household.

Create the split and share the code
A name, a colour, and the split is ready. The share code is generated right away: you send it by message, the others enter it from “Join a split” and you approve their request.
Everyone logs what they paid
An expense, an amount, the person who paid. Each participant logs their own as they pay, without waiting for the end of the trip or funnelling everything through one person.
Settle up in a few transfers
The Breakdown view shows everyone’s share, their balance and the transfers needed to even things out. Make the transfers, and the split is settled.
