Create your household and invite the other members

Welcome to Melimelo. Before you add a single item to the shopping list or a single task, there's one thing to do first: create your household. It's what lets several people share the same lists, the same calendar and the same fridge, and find everything synced in real time on all their screens.

# Why a household in Melimelo

Everything you manage in Melimelo belongs to your household: the shopping list, recipes, tasks, the calendar, routines, birthdays. If you live alone, your household is just you, and that's perfectly fine. If there are 2, 4 or 7 of you, everyone sees the same list in real time, with no screenshots sent back and forth.

A household isn't a family in the administrative sense. It's a group of people who choose to share their day-to-day logistics. Partner, children, flatmates, parents who stay during the week: everyone can be part of it.

An account belongs to one household at a time. If someone invites you to another household while you already have one, the app offers to leave yours and join the new one.

# Create your household

Create your account on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows or right in your browser. You're asked for your first name when you sign up: the other members will see it, and it will appear next to the actions you take.

The onboarding then guides you screen by screen.

1. Name your household. “The Carters”, “The 3rd-floor flatshare”, whatever feels like you. You can change the name later.
2. Choose your first modules. The app asks what you want to organise and suggests the modules that fit. You can turn on others at any time.
3. Describe your household. Who lives with you, a few preferences and the household's address if you want to add it.
4. Invite, if you like. You can share the invitation code right away or skip this step.
5. Open your household. The “Your household is ready!” screen ends with “Open my household”. It's empty, and that's normal. Everything you add will be there when the others arrive.

# Invite the other members

Tap or click your household's name, at the top left of the screen: the household menu opens. 2 paths lead to the invitation, which is reserved for household admins.

The “Invite to the household” window shows a code, a QR code and the “Share invite code” button. The shared message contains the code and a link: send it by text, by message or through any other channel that suits you.

The person you invite opens the link or enters the code. If Melimelo is installed, the app opens. If not, the link opens Melimelo in the browser. All they have left to do is create their account or sign in to join your household. The first time they open the app, the “I got an invitation code” option leads to the same place.

For someone close to you who has no email address or doesn't need to sign in, choose “Create a member manually”. Their first name will appear everywhere in your household, and you can create a username and password for them if you still want them to sign in.

# Choose who sees what

By default, every member sees all the household's active modules. That's deliberate: transparency lightens the mental load, and nobody needs to ask where the shopping went or what's planned for Wednesday evening.

With Premium, you can set each member's access, module by module, on 4 levels: none, read, user, manage. Typically for a child.

The same setting is available from the member's page, under “Access”, with “Manage permissions”. You can also give or remove their admin status, which lets them invite or remove other members.

# What happens when someone joins you

As soon as a new member joins your household, they land on the home screen with all the existing content: lists, calendar events, tasks in progress. They can add, edit and tick things off.

# What you can do next

Once the household is set up, opening a first module that's useful to everyone is the best next step. 3 good candidates to start with:

• Shopping to share one list together, with no duplicates.
• Calendar to line up shared appointments. You can import your Google, Outlook or iCloud calendars into it (see the dedicated guide for iCloud).
• Messages to talk about specific topics without leaving the app.

Using several devices? Sign in with the same account everywhere, on your phone, your tablet, your computer or in the browser: you'll find the same household, up to date.
